Commercial Post Construction Clean-Up Call us today to perform your post construction cleaning!

SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline works with a number of commercial businesses in the area to assist with what we call post construction clean-ups.  Whenever a commercial business experiences some kind of water damage that requires demo, additions or remodeling you will come across construction dust throughout the area.  Contractors will cut flooring, trim work and will have to sand drywall in the area they are working.  As a result, there is a fine powder that will be on all horizontal surfaces.  When the construction portion is complete and all repairs or remodeling are done, the commercial business will contact us to schedule a crew to come out and clean the space before returning it to their tenant or customer.  We come in and do a thorough cleaning of the area, cleaning walls, baseboards, window sills and flooring.

If you have a commercial property and need SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline's services, call us today at 804-730-6788!

Fire and Soot Cleaning Losses

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire and Soot Cleaning Losses We call these "soot bunnies" - which are the soot particles that join together and appear to be cobwebs, but are not.

Fire and soot cleaning losses are very emotional for our customers.  The trauma from the actual fire and the overwhelming task to clean the structure and affected contents often proves to be too much for a homeowner or business owner to perform the cleaning themselves.

Our first course of action is to meet with the homeowner to establish their concerns and schedule the work to begin as soon as possible.  The quicker the homeowner sees progress the sooner they feel at ease.  we want to address all aspects of the fire loss: the visual soot that is being clean, the odor resulting in the fire and the emotional part of the customer.  We want to make sure our customer's know that we will treat their items as if they were our own possessions.  We take our time so that we can be as thorough and successful as possible.  our goal inf ire and soot cleaning is to make the customer feel whole again after such a tragic life event.  We try to make a bad situation as pleasant as possible.

SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline will make it "Like it never even happened."

Air Scrubbers

Fire Damage Air Scrubbers Air scrubbers like this, help remove gasses, particles or odors from a given area.

Ever wonder why restoration professionals use air scrubbers or negative air machines on a fire clean-up?  These devices are utilized to clean the air of odors and toxic gases that are lost over after the fire has been extinguished.  This creates a safe working environment for the work screws and in the prevention of secondary damage to structure and contents from odors.  This is achieved by changing the air in the damaged structure at a minimum of three times per hour.  We accomplish this by setting up the machine under positive air negative air flow determined by the severity of the fire.  This ultimately helps reduce or eliminate smoke, soot, ash particles and residues which are present after a fire.

If you have questions or need help with odor call SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline!

Hurricane Season

Storm Damage Hurricane Season Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.
Hurricanes have the potential to dump enormous amounts of rain, sometimes as much as 10-15 inches, on areas they pass over, and this rainfall can continue long after the storm moves inland.

With hurricanes, flooding can follow.  Here are some interesting facts about flooding.

According to records during the past 30 years:
  • A person can be swept away by six inches of moving water.
  • An automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water.
  • Rainfall is typically heavier with slower moving storms.

It is important to stay safe during hurricanes and be prepared.  Check out this website https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes to prepare yourself and know what to do when a hurricane is headed in your general direction.

Should you experience water damage from a hurricane, call SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline and we will make it "Like it never even happened."

Benefits of Soda Blasting

7/23/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Benefits of Soda Blasting Here is an example of Chris McDowell soda blasting a crawlspace.

Soda blasting is a great remediation/cleaning method to use for microbial growth and soot contamination removal.  It not only acts as a more abrasive method to remove mold it also acts as a natural deodorizer and drying agent.  This can be beneficial when trying to reduce moisture levels and dampness in crawlspaces.

The process of soda blasting is attaching a 185 compressor to the soda machine with the use of air hoses.  The pressure flows the soda through the blast hose and out the nozzle with force to remove the microbial growth or soot from the surface.

Soda blasting sometimes is a more effective method to cleaning mold over hand wiping depending on the size and amount of mold growth.

Call SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline today if you have a situation where you think soda blasting may work for you!  We are always here to help and make it "Like it never even happened."

Air Movers are Essential to Drying

7/19/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Air Movers are Essential to Drying Call SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline today if you need help with a water damage!

Air movers are an essential and necessary tool for drying structures of homes.  Air movers help move large amounts of air over surfaces to dry them.

There are a number of different air movers that can be utilized depending on the size of the job.  Velo air movers are low-profile air movers that can used to get to hard to reach areas and a great to assist in the drying of carpet.  Sahara air movers are great for drying carpets and directing air upwards to helping with drying ceilings.  One of the most common fans that SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline uses is the ace fan.  These air movers are great for directing large amounts of air either forward, upward, downward and use little power.  The last type of air mover that we use is the vortex fan or axial fan.  This air mover works great for crawlspaces.  they are very effective at creating negative pressure and pushing humid air out of a space.

Air movers work great when paired with dehumidifiers.  The air mover can move the hot dry air over the wet surface you are trying to dry and without an air mover being used through the process it would be near impossible to dry the structure.

Hardwood Floor Drying

7/18/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Hardwood Floor Drying We added this valuable drying capability to our business to help our customers avoid costly wood floor replacement.

Hardwood floors used to be one of the hardest types of floor covering to dry once wet.  The moisture would get trapped between and under the hardwood boards and normally the hardwood floors would have to be removed.

SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline has been successful in drying sand on site hardwood floors  with the use of the Dri-Eaz Rescue Mat System.  This system goes directly on the floors and pulls the moisture up from between the boards.

“The Dri-Eaz Rescue Mat System is used along with the Dri-Eaz DriForce high pressure blower to deliver effective drying to the full depth of water damaged wood floors, even to the substrate. The system utilizes sturdy, self-sealing mats and the Dri-Force to draw evaporated moisture from deep inside the material to the surface, replacing it with drier air.” (source: Dri-Eaz Rescue Mat Manual)

The key to successful hardwood floor drying is to start the drying process as quickly as possible.  This allows the moisture to be removed before the hardwood floors start to cup or buckle.  Even if you do notice slight cupping or buckling the rescue mat system may still dry the floors and cause them to settle back down.  If drying is successful but the floors remain cupped or buckled, then sanding and refinishing may be necessary.

Crawlspace Mold - New Construction

7/16/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Crawlspace Mold - New Construction Moisture and elevated humidity in Virginia is the perfect recipe for mold growth in the crawlspace.

We often get questions and concerns regarding residential crawlspaces.  Most homes in Virginia have a crawlspace beneath the house.  Although some people choose to have their crawlspace conditioned, more often they are not.  Since, we do not “live” in the crawlspace, most people don’t even think about it.  However when they do, the biggest concern is mold.  We live in a state that has areas where the water table is high making the surrounding ground areas very wet.  We also suffer from high humidity during the summer time.

During the rainy season, it is not uncommon for us to have to clean and treat the joists and main beams in a crawlspace, of a newly built home.  The building material gets wet from the rain.  Once it is built we have hot humid days and therefore mold easily begins to grow.  Such was the case for a recently built home in Hopewell, VA.  Sometimes the mold can be removed by physically wiping and treating with our EPA registered disinfectant / cleaner from SERVPRO.  However, in this particular instance, the mold growth was significantly growing throughout the crawlspace.  We recommended soda blasting, which would not only help remove the mold, but would also help with the moisture issues in the crawlspace.  A dehumidifier was installed to help lower the humidity in the crawlspace, all vapor barrier and insulation was removed.  After the entire crawlspace was soda blasted, a brand new 6 mil. poly vapor barrier was installed.  The dehumidifier and a fan was re-installed to reduce the moisture content of the joists and beams.  To help prevent future mold growth, all of the joists, beams and subfloor were sealed with Fosters 40-51.  Finally, new insulation was re-installed and a dehumidifier was purchased and installed, so the homeowner could run it during the hot and humid season. The homeowner and builder was impressed and very happy with the work SERVPRO of Hanover, Goochland & Caroline completed in the crawlspace.
